A SADNESS IN MY HEART
Whenever I take a deep breath
your absent lovely face appears
fully present before my crying eyes.
I often think of the first time I saw you,
and knew then and there, you were the one.
Surprised by your wedding ring, I decided
it was of no matter, that I would bite it off your
finger like a fercious lion if it got in the way.
Determined to rescue you, imagining
I was like the lifeguard I used to be,
swimming away with you on my back
like I used to cling to my father swimmimg
from Canarsie to Brighton Beach.
I would swim to the ends of the earth
as long as I had you. I push the hands of
my clocks forward in the hope of reuniting
with you one day sooner.
